It’s the end of the traditional work week and I, like so many others, are drained and ready for a break from the work routine. Don’t get me wrong, I love what I do, but we all need to take time to rejuvenate and care for ourselves. Much of my writing talks about the need for meditation, for spending as little as 10 minutes a day in quiet time to reflect on self, the world around you, your feelings, etc.
When I saw this graphic I immediately knew I had to share it. The technique is perfect and easy to do. Yes, easy. The technique is not complicated; maintaining the meditative state of being is. But that comes with time. If you try this technique, just 10 minutes each day, you will begin to feel a change within you; a peace beginning to develop.
Here is my list of some of the reasons people don’t meditate along with my response:
1. “I don’t have time” True, most of us are busy all day long. But I will bet that if we review our daily schedule we can find 10 minutes. Get creative.
2. “I can’t sit still” No problem, take a walk. Slowly walk, focusing on your breathing and noticing the small things around you.
3. “My mind won’t stop thinking” Yeah, mine does the same, too. Meditation does not necessarily mean we have to clear our mind. Meditating is more about taking time for yourself, staying present in the moment, and being aware of your breathing. Go with your thoughts, allow them to happen.
4. “I’m afraid of what I may find” Valid point; there may be past memories for which we are not yet prepared to actively engage just yet. When those thoughts or feelings arise, either move on to other thoughts or end your meditation. It is important, for your own peace, to one day engage and work through your past, but now may not be that time, especially if you are alone.
5. “I prefer to be active, to do things with my hands” Ok, so maybe sitting still or slowly walking while reflecting on your breathing is not for you, yet. Do what is right for you. Maybe it’s journaling, painting, woodworking, etc. The important aspects though are that you are taking time for yourself to stay focused in the present moment and to be aware of your breathing. Direct your activities to those which help you to focus and express what you are feeling.
