I think its safe for me to say that we’ve all had dreams. I’m not talking about the dreams we have during sleep, but those dreams we have for our future. I also think its safe to say that many of us have never realized those dreams. The dreams we have, or had, are but memories. For many of us, we feel that the realization of dreams is for others, not for me. Why is that? Obviously there are people who realize their dreams. It’s not totally unheard of.

We may be asking, “but why don’t my dreams come true?” In my past I have asked that question, but I no longer ask that of myself. Have all my dreams come true then? Well, yes and no. The older I become the more I realize that our dreams are a part of who we are. We are the dreamers, so the pieces of our dreams are parts of us waiting to be shaped in a particular way. In other words, we may not realize a particular dream in its ideal, but if we look at the pieces of our dreams, I bet that many of us are realizing our dreams without even knowing it.

Here are some of my suggestions, based on my reflections and lived experience, on realizing one’s dreams:

  1. Identify your dream. Plan it out and imagine it being successful. Imagine the details, the planning, the execution, the resources needed. Is it exactly as you want it to be? Hold on to that image.
  2. On paper, or electronically, list the pieces and parts of your dream? What is needed to realize your dream? List the small and the large pieces.
  3. Looking at your list, what parts of your dream are you already living? How can you improve on those pieces? What parts are you not living but could begin to live quite easily? Work toward those.
  4. Reflect on the pieces and parts that seem to be out of your grasp. Are they realistic? Maybe they aren’t attainable now, but can they ever be attainable? If so, start planning. If not, move on to something else.
  5. Never give up. Always have hope. Share your dream with others and invite them to help in its realization.
  6. Take action! A dream can never be fulfilled without action. Keep dreaming; and start acting!
  7. Above all, enjoy the dream! Enjoy the imagination, each piece, the process, and the hope!

This song by Expose has, and still does, inspire me, and I hope it inspires you, as well. I have included the lyrics below the video.

When this world that I see
Is too hard to take
And too much for me
And everything’s in blue

When the rain’s pourin’ down
And I can’t find the sun
Don’t mean the sun can’t be found
It always comes through

There’s not a soul that’s lost
That can’t find its way
There’s not a night that’s long
That can’t find the day

As long as I can dream
There’s a better world
Oh, there’s a better world
I see it shinin’

And in my dreams, I see
There’s a better world
Oh, there’s a better world
As long as I can dream

In my heart there’s a place
Where there’s always hope
And always a way
To make it through the night

And in my soul, I believe
If I just have faith
Then I will be free
I’ll be alright

There’s not a soul that’s lost
(Not a soul)
That can’t find its way
There’s not a night that’s long
That can’t find the day

As long as I can dream
There’s a better world
Oh, there’s a better world
I see it shinin’

And in my dreams, I see
There’s a better world
Oh, there’s a better world
As long as I can dream

There’s not a soul that’s lost
That can’t find its way
There’s not a night that’s long

(As long as I can dream)
As long as I can dream
There’s a better world
(I can see it shinin’ on me)

In my dreams I see
(In my dreams that I see, yeah)
There’s a better world
As long as I can dream

There’s a better world
There’s a better world
(And I can see it, yes it’s shinin’ on me)
I can see it shinin’ on me

In my dreams I see
(In my dreams I see)
There’s a better world
(Just as long as I can dream)

As long as I can dream
I see a better world
(As long as I can dream)
The rain is pourin’ down
Don’t mean the sun can’t be found
(As long as I can dream)

As long as I can dream
I see a better world
(As long as I can dream)
The rain is pourin’ down
Don’t mean the sun can’t be found
(As long as I can dream)

As long as I can dream
I see a better world
(As long as I can dream)
The rain is pourin’ down
Don’t mean the sun can’t be found
(As long as I can dream)
